If there was such a thing as a "pedestrian watch" at A. Lange & Sohne then it would surely be one of their "more basic" watches priced under ,000 like this 1815 Up/Down. Anything over that simply could not be considered "ordinary." There of course is jest in my words as A. Lange & Sonhe is among the most exclusive high-end brands in the world that given their volume (about 5,000 or less watches a year) produce the nicest movements around. Turn over one of their watches - ideally a chronograph, and you'll see what the fuss is all about.

I sat here pondering possible "bird" puns and idioms that might apply to an opening statement for discussing this extremely high-end and limited minute repeater automaton - and they all just felt really silly. No jokes need apply because this is a rather cool and serious timepiece by Jaquet Droz that allows you to use your imagination in making up your own nicknames for the Swiss brand's new "The Bird Repeater" timepiece.

Flashback 1996: Starts An Online Revolution

The Sinn U1 is a relatively heavy watch. On the tegimented bracelet, with a couple of links removed, it comes in close to 1/2 pound. The 44mm case is just right for my almost 7 1/2 wrist and is somewhat comfortable, while (again) heavy. This is especially true since as mentioned, Sinn places the crown at 4 o'clock instead of the common 3 o'clock.  This makes the crown easy to grasp while also avoiding putting any pressure on your wrist as you move your arm and your hand.

Using the natural stone agate, Cartier has a dial with a crocodile carved in relief. They also throw in a little tourbillon action for good measure. Agate is a common but beautiful stone that I believe is similar to amethyst. It is found primarily in volcanic rocks as I understand it. Agate is often blue and further tends to have various shades of blue that lighten toward the center. By selecting the right piece of an agate rock to carve, a skilled artist can make use of the color changes to their advantage. Sure enough, in this Cartier watch you can see how a section of agate is used to highlight the crocodile head in a lighter shade of blue, but the lower sections are a darker blue. It makes for a beautiful effect.

The video which Breva had produced makes the Génie 01 looks like sex on gears. What’s with that ball rolling around? It reminds me of that famous mid 1990s Lexus commercial with the metal ball mysteriously flowing over the curves of a car. Breva should be commended for filling that gap in the horological world where a mechanical weather station watch should have been sitting. This timepiece is the first of its kind, and follows in the footsteps of the HYT H1 watch, that was also designed with the help of Chronode.

Eventually, I came to approve of and even greatly desire one, then two, and later, more Rolex watch models. What really changed my perception of Rolex was being able to survey the competition. My status as a watch writer and expert affords me the opportunity to handle over 1,000 watches per year. I've reviewed a lot of watches and can say for sure that Rolex does a lot of things the very best. You also can't deny the communicative power a Rolex watch has when saying something about your status, wealth, and taste. None of it may be true, but years of work have given Rolex wearers a pretty good personality edge. Even people who think buying a Rolex is too easy a way of showing actual or apparent wealth can usually only fault the wearer and not the watch. I've come to find that a Rolex watch is infrequently a bad choice.

Icelandic watchmaker JS Watch has just announced a beautiful new aviator called the Frisland 1941. Part of the Frisland collection, the 1941 is a classic looking Pilot watch with a little bit of JS Watch flair to it. The watch has a retro World War II look to it in honor of the Reykjavik airport that opened in 1941 during World War II. It was built by the British in Iceland and in 1946 was handed over to Iceland's sovereign government to run on their own. Apparently the area did serve as an airstrip before the formal airport was built, but that is enough history to justify the production of this watch collection.

I've been following your blog for years now and love the watch reviews. One thing always puzzles me, though. Why don't the reviews contain more details on the watch movements? If the topic was fine autos, a major portion of the review would focus on the engine and transmission. I realize the analogy is not exact, and the space allotted per review is limited, but the movement is really the heart of the watch. How about adding a new section in the blog dedicated to just movements?

Looking through the exhibitor list, I was most excited to see the pieces by the new independents. Companies like MB&F, Urwerk, Ressence and Slyde, that are pioneering new methods of displaying time, as well as taking horology in exciting directions. Then I was also excited to see some of the new emerging companies, and looking at how they were going to differentiate themselves from the crowd. The old faithfuls, like JLC, Vacheron Constantin, GP, were there as well, and established credibility to the event by their presence.

On wrist, the Master Ultra Thin Perpetual wears very nicely. Thin and unobtrusive, this JLC really shines thanks to its sizing and effortless wrist presence. Viewable via the display case back is the JLC calibre 868 which is comprised of 336 parts (including 46 jewels) and has a power reserve of 38 hours.

The lack of a date cutout also results in what is a simply awesomely symmetrical dial; which is easily one of my favorite aspects of the Rolex Milgauss.  First, the dial is black with simple baton-like hour markers filled with white Super-Luminova that shine green, though the markers at 3, 6, and 9 are orange-filled and shine blue.  At twelve o'clock is a large Rolex coronet underneath which the Rolex Milgauss model is marked with the common Oyster Perpetual.  The hour and minutes hands are similar to the Datejust model and are made of white gold with a thin strip of the white Super-Luminova.  On the periphery of the dial is the now common ROLEX ROLEX (…) and unique serial number (at 6 o'clock) laser etched markings which helps with counterfeiting and gives the dial a certain genuineness…

Carbon fiber is a major point of the collection as you can see. Another one of the new Big Bang Ferrari watches is the Big Bang Ferrari Red Magic Carbon (401.QX.0123.VR). This is the most distinctive of the new collection as it is very much an "in-house" Hublot. Each of the watches contain in-house movements, but this one features a solid carbon fiber case that was also made in-house at Hublot. One thing you'll notice if you survey various carbon fiber cases is that Hublot does the best job at highlighting the particular checkered texture that distinguishes carbon fiber as a material. This watch is also equipped with a red tinted sapphire crystal which debuted a few years back in the first Hublot Red Magic watches that we discussed here. At least now you know where the "Red Magic" name came from.

The most interesting element of the Kambys is the power reserve indicator. The manually wound caliber 7778 movement has a power reserve of seven days. It uses three stacked cylinders on the right-side of the case which slowly fall as the power reserve indicator goes from full to empty. We wouldn't call it a technical improvement, but it is merely something new and interesting for otherwise bored watch lovers. The caliber 7778 movement doubles as the watch dial, offering the time with subsidiary seconds dial and another feature that Cyrus call their "secret animation." Using a pusher in the left-side crown, the disc located at about 10 o'clock spins to reveal one of three pictures. One image is the Cyrus brand logo, the next is an image of their brand mascot (a 2,500 year old coin) and last, the number of the piece in the limited edition. According to Cyrus, if any of this bores you, then they are happy to produce custom secret animation images for you.
