Ambrelus Dreadnought Takes Watch Winder Design To New Level Luxury Items

The Moscow Slava movement factory closed down years ago, and I am not familiar with the full chain of ownership, but from what I understand it fell into the hands of Alexander Shorokoff. Watch lovers recognize that name associated with a really nice brand based in Germany designed by the Russian Mr. Shorokoff. So he owned the no longer operating Slava factory and the items it contained. Apparently, he sold off a lot of movements to CCCP Time, that used them for the production of some of its mechanical watches such as the CCCP Heritage. CCCP Time further claims that the movements were in understandably poor shape and that a fair amount of restoration work and new parts were required to make them operate properly.

Future Gustafsson & Sjogren Bifrost watches will have differing parts but share the same basic case and movement. GoS has even announced that upcoming models will have two-tone 18k gold and Damascus steel cases - which should prove interesting. Once again, the first of the GoS Bifrost watch is this Gustafsson & Sjogren Bifrost Isbla, and it will be limited to just 25 pieces at a price of ,500goswatches.com

I was pleasantly surprised that the Omega Seamster 300 Co-Axial was chosen for me because it is my favorite watch that Omega released this year. The vintage-inspired design is just fantastic, and then there is a cool Master Co-Axial movement which is highly anti-magnetic and uses silicon components to improve timekeeping and reliability. And of course there is the beautifully crafted bracelet which has a micro-adjustment feature. All in all, I think the Seamaster Co-Axial is really great watch and I’m really happy to receive it as a gift.

If you need any more proof that Apple is serious about wearables, the company has just hired another luminary from the fashion and luxury business, Marc Newson. Of course, Newson’s work is not just limited exclusively to fashion - he has designed furniture as well - but he is arguably (at least among horological circles like ours) most famous for his work on the watch brand Ikepod. Needless to say, it is very likely that the design of future Apple wearables will be heavily influenced by Newson. Here are 10 interesting facts about Newson’s design work at Ikepod.

Seen above, is the other state of the dial, all set to serve the secondary function of the watch: the monopusher chronograph. Once the swift, 5-seconds process of transformation is over, the Montblanc Metamorphosis II shows a greatly different face: a sportier, more modern design that is meant to go with the perceived sporty nature of the chronograph. Roman numerals on the hours sub-dial are swapped for Arabic ones, while the one at six o'clock is new as well: the date dial has been replaced with a 30-minute counter for the elapsed minutes of the chronograph. Furthermore, the areas surrounding the two sub-dials are now in dark grey, making for a more easily recognizable aesthetic.

With the handset, I thought Gavox did a good job. The shorter hour hand calls to mind the fliegers that have the secondary hour track printed on the inner ring, and I like the needle tips both hands exhibit. If it were up to me, though, I would have perhaps widened and lengthened the hour hand a touch, as the taper from the needle tip does make it seem shorter than it is.

I may have mentioned this in the past, but I really like the idea of thin dive watches (even though I rather ironically also like the idea of very thick dive watches). At 42mm wide and 11mm thick, the Calibre Diver wears very nicely on the wrist with an admirable width and a very svelte profile for a dive watches.

Is the Leatherman Tread a legitimately useful tool or a lifestyle item for guys who want others to think they know a little bit about being "hands-on?" That is a good question. While the tools on the Leatherman Tread likely work nicely enough, they are mostly suited to emergency purposes when you have nothing else available. Trying to unscrew anything with the Leatherman Tread is going to be an extended manual process. I think Leatherman will likely sell a lot of Treads - especially those with the watch attachment, but no one will use one to replace their traditional Leatherman or other mutli-tool.

Turn the plate over and one is greeted with further impeccable beveling as well as alternate satin finishing and circular graining. After 160 hours of assembling the 317 movement components, the movement is placed within the case. The timepiece, in its entirety, embodies consistent perfection of the movement, tri-axial tourbillon, dial structure, and white gold case producing another testament to Girard-Perregaux's haute horlogerie integrity.

Nevertheless, Hublot might want to consider a bit more structural design experimentation with many of their limited edition watches in a similar way to what Audemars Piguet has done for years. The latter brand often used its limited edition Royal Oak Offshore models as a testing place to experiment with new design elements and materials – which allowed for watch lovers to find more interest in the many limited edition models that may have otherwise not interested them. The ref. 748.QX.1199.NR.LAK14 Hublot King Power Los Angeles Lakers Watch will be released as a limited edition of 50 pieces, priced at ,900, and available exclusively at the Hublot boutique in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles. hublot.com

With so many new collectors coming into the market, watch auctions are a big business now. Philips recently announced a new watch department headed by Aurel Bacs, who was until very recently the International Head of Watches for Christies. However, the world of watch auctions is not all as it may seem. Yes, it may be exciting and glamorous, but there are also many potential pitfalls. We kickstart this month’s roundup by highlighting some facts about watch auctions that you ought to know.

All Every Guy Wants For Christmas Is A New Invicta!

According to the company, the Sony FES Watch comes pre-loaded with a few dial and strap styles that attempt to make the best use possible of the e-ink display. I think it is really cool, actually, to see e-ink used for both the strap and case. Assuming the Sony FES Watch has the ability to receive updated software and/or user-generated designs, it could be very cool. More likely, however, is that the Sony FES Watch "mark I" will be the beginning of a larger assortment of fashion-related modern timepieces (and other times) that exist somewhere off to the sides with the traditional watch camp on one end and the emerging smartwatch industry on the other. As though consumers needed more wrist watch choices these days, right?

In their nearly three-year association, Blacc and IWC have found numerous synergies in their mutually beneficial relationship. In fact, Blacc wrote his biggest hit “Wake Me Up” as a direct result of his association with IWC, inspired by a 2012 trip to Geneva as IWC’s guest to experience the annual Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie. Intriguingly, Blacc’s initial interest in IWC stemmed from the watch company’s commitment to socially and ecologically conscious altruism in its products and practices. In a candid exclusive conversation with aBlogToWatch - graciously hosted in the elegant confines of IWC's Beverly Hills flagship boutique - Blacc details how he became a brand ambassador for one of watchdom’s most prestigious marques, and the effect it’s had on him – as not just a lover of elite watchmaking, but also as an artist, philanthropist, and global citizen. And oh yeah, we get to see his totally awesome collection of cream-of-the-crop IWC models… Read on, friends.

One thing I am curious about is how Apple intends to deal with those people who want more than one Apple Watch, but want them to all sync together. Like it is with traditional watches, collectors and those with the budget will want to own various versions to wear at various times. I don't think the Apple Watch in steel on the steel bracelet is the version people will want to use while exercising. At the same time, they might want an Apple Watch Sport with a lighter aluminum case on a lighter strap for exercise and sport purposes as well as for traveling and other mobile activities.

If you ever used to play with LEGO, I can tell you that these shields look a lot like the visors of the tiny little LEGO helmets. They have tiny bits extending from their sides which, again, allow them to be fixed to an axis. Their brushed finishing and warm metallic hue looks absolutely fantastic in person – and the action with which they close and open is nothing short of what you would expect from a high-end watch.

At 41mm wide, this is among the larger "classic looking" Patek Philippe watches out there. Most other watches of this ilk in the Patek Philippe collection are more historic and smaller in size, being under 40mm wide. This is the first "modern sized" classic looking Patek Philippe watch that was on my radar and I like how it feels on the wrist. As a dressier style watch, it looks really lovely and it doesn't feel too small on the wrist, given my tastes. I think Patek Philippe hit a sweet spot here for classic watch lovers that normally feel Patek timepieces aren't quite exciting or modern enough.

Speedmaster Date 'Panda'

Beyond stunning figures, the Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime features a very new, and we should say unexpected, novelty from Patek: a swiveling case. Much like some of the most highly complicated pocket watches of the manufacture, the "GMC" can only manage to display all related information of its numerous complications on not one, but two dials. The heavily engraved 18k rose gold case – which is composed of 214 parts in itself – is suspended between similarly lavishly decorated lugs, and the case can be rotated on the longitudinal axis, allowing the owner to be able to wear the watch with either of the two dials facing up – without having to swap the straps, as seen on some other "two-faced" watches. The idea is to allow the wearer to have either side of the case be the "front."

8. Marc Newson obsessed over ergonomics and comfort. As a result, he designed a totally custom an unique looking rubber strap to be used on most of his Ikepod watches, which was supposed to make them fit perfectly balanced on one's wrist. The Ikepod rubber strap was initially released in 1996, and was the first result of Marc Newson dabbling in CAD (computer-aided design). UPDATE: The fluorolastomer strap on the Apple Watch looks very reminiscent of this design, and it is highly likely that Newson worked on it.
