5 Important Speedmasters for Chronos

Another interesting story about the watch is why it has an alarm. Underwater, alarms are more functional than outside of the water. That is because sound travels more efficiently - so you can hear them better. Jaeger wanted to separate its dive watch from those made by other brands that had rotating dive bezels. Such bezels where used to help divers with certain reminders. So Jaeger-LeCoultre decided that its dive watch would have an alarm. That way you could time an event and actually be reminded when it was time to do something. I would have never thought of that unless JLC told me about it. Like many other brands Jaeger-LeCoultre watches have a lot of great history, but you need to really experience the brand for a while to learn all the little stories.

Hands-On: Omega Speedmaster 311.10.39.30.01.001 Review

Bovet timepieces has a strong relationship with Italian designer Pininfarina. Last year they surprised us with a watch based on that partnership that was an impressive combination of complications and modern design in a watch that still adhered to tradition. Those who don't get to listen to watch maker rhetoric often may not be quite as aware of the strong role that "tradition" plays in Swiss watch making. It is the concept that there are certain rules of watch making and design that really can't be neglected or left out.

Casio has been developing it's Edifice collection of watches for the last few years, and I like where they are going. Some people are going to take one look at this dial and sigh at how complex it is. This is the opposite of a simple watch dial. In fact, Casio designers did just about everything they could do to give it a rich, three-dimensional appearance with as many textures and levels as possible. There is also the fact that the hands and dials each have at least more than one function depending on the mode the watch is in. I will however say that legibility is better than one expects. There are large easy to see yellowish hour markers and white hands. These have been lume coated and are pretty easy to see in the dark.  There is also the date window. It looks hidden, but once you know where to look it isn't hard to spot. The watch has full calendar date to the year 2099, but you'll need to use the manual to adjust the calendar properly.

Alpina matches the watch to their thick black rubber strap. It features one of those nice "tuck-under" deployments where the excess strap is hidden from view. The push-button deployment is really cool looking actually (and works well), certainly a selling point of the watch. On outside of the strap you'll find "Alpina Geneve," and inside the strap you'll find "Alpina" written engraved in the rubber again and again as a repeating patten texture - a nice touch.

One Of Our Readers Talks About His Gold Speedmaster 3695.50.31

Regardless of my nit-picky comments, awards and events like the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève are indeed fun for us watch enthusiasts. They keep us entertained throughout the year, hopefully holding us over until we get to start discussing Basel 2012 in just a couple months. 😉 And in addition to being good entertainment, they're also good for customers. These kinds of events keep competitive pressure on the watch manufactures to continue to innovate and introduce new technologies and products. Customers win in the end.

The Grand Holiday Watch Giveaway For 2011

The Grand Holiday Watch Giveaway For 2011

Years ago when the first Hublot Big Bang came out it was an interesting watch to most people. It had an aggressive military and industrial sensibility to it that so many men enjoyed back then, and still enjoy today. Not everyone is in love with Hublot watches, but most tend to agree that the Big Bang was a solid design. So solid that for a long time Hublot became typecast as a firm making only Big Bang watches. That is until a few years ago when watches like the King Power and others came along to fill in the product line a bit more.

A Closer Look At Christie's Omega Speedmaster 50 Auction (Live Photos)

I think the term has even higher value today that it ever has. Especially when something is an American made high-end functional craft. These are probably among the most rare items and are highly collectible - just look at the auction market for antique American made furniture. When at a store seeing something "made in America," it makes me stop and think, and feel grateful. Items such as that feel increasingly rare. So what of our craft and creativity? Where is the art of Americana.

The dial is quite fashionable with its metallic green hue and textured face. There are applied, polished hour markers that are a mix of Arabic numerals and baton markers. Note the small red mark for 8 o'clock which is a signature element in all Marvin watches. On the side of the case is a historic Marvin logo engraving. The angled, geometric crown is a nice touch with the Marvin crown logo in relief.

Any one who wears this watch has got to be like the title character in the Emperor's New Clothes. Haldimann will have totally tricked them into thinking that this is some meaningful piece of art and a poetic testament to the ephemeral nature of time. Though everyone really feels like it is a vapid concept but is likely too afraid to say anything. The real tragedy is that under the black crystal is probably a pretty nice watch, but that hardly matters right? This watch makes a lot more sense as an April fool's day joke. In fact I wish I would have thought of it myself. As a serious timepiece the H9 Reduction is simply confounding. It is OK, don't be afraid to call it out for what you feel that it is.

Make It A Christmas To Remember!

Attached to the case is that green and black strap that needs to be cut to size. I tend to not like these, but once properly sized they world out. Citizen will charge you bucks for a new one I hear. The overall fit and finish of the case and watch is impressive. Everyone also seems to like the presentation box it comes with. With some drawbacks that might be serious or trivial based on your needs, the Citizen Eco-Drive Satellite Wave wave is still very impressive and cool. No doubt it signals upcoming technologies and still shows that the Japanese have the total edge when it comes to producing the tech elite of the watch world. Price for the limited edition Eco-Drive Satellite Wave watch is a steep ,800.

Bausele's brand slogan is "Australian Soul - Swiss Made." It should probably be changed to "Australian Soil - Swiss Made." Why? See that rather obviously too-large crown? Well, it is filled with one of three choices of dirt! Not just any dirt, Australian dirt, mate.

Speedmaster 3513.53.00 For The Japanese Market In 1996

I have no clue what Alpina was thinking when their designer approved the hands on this Startimer Classic Automatic Chronograph watch. More like TinyTimer. This is exactly the type of crap that pisses me off. This watch makes me want to yell obscenities. Everything else about this watch is fine if you are going for that retro chronograph watch look - but those hands, what the hell is up with those stupid tiny hands? This isn't just a mistake, this is horological abuse.

Last year's attempt at making hot selling watches in China was to reduce diameter sizes. There are other reasons for this aside from perceived Asian tastes - such as cost cutting and the popularity of vintage timepieces - but it was generally agreed that small watches were made primarily to pacify the hungry Chinese watch market. The brands then turned on the hype machines to "educate" and persuade fashion writers that "small watches were now in fashion." To a large degree they succeeded, and the well-dressed elite in New York followed suit penning that a real man wears a "reasonably sized watch." I disagreed with their definition of what a reasonable size was.

A French Collector Tells Us About His Speedmaster Reference 105.003-65 and 145.022-69

The steel watch and bracelet are 43mm wide, while the bracelet now uses horizontal style links (though a middle link is hidden on the inside for greater wearing comfort). Really nice with that typical German boutique watch makers attention to detail and quality. Price is ,670. Contact Temption to ask where to get one (or direct from them). Last I heard most of what they produce is sold in Asia (often Japan).

Initially available for the Brazilian market, this "Emme" watch is from new brand Dwiss. Silly names I know, but it is a potentially inexpensive way to get a mechanical watch that pretty well resembles what a lot of people like in an Hublot or Audemars Piguet Royal Oak.
